Objective
The objective of the proposed Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowship is to provide the researcher with training and research experience in the field of combustion modelling and Large Eddy Simulations. He will be working in a multidisciplinary multilingual international research team and obtain the required training to work as a full member of the research team. The researcher has proven his academic capabilities through the excellent work, which he has achieved during this Ph.D. research. This Ph.D. research on the development of advanced combustion models has been performed in cooperation with industry (Rolls-Royce plc, UK). Building on this work, this proposal will give the researcher an opportunity to develop his career further, and exploit the technology developed during his Ph.D. research to the industry. Cooperation with universities and research institutes will be an essential part of the work, in order to keep up-to-date with the state of art. This will be enabled through existing collaborations with a considerable number of universities and research institutes of the host institute, via national and European research projects.
The scientific objective of this proposal is to improve the modelling of Low Emission Combustors for aero-engines. During his Ph.D. research at the Eindhoven University of Technology the researcher has been working on the development and application of the Phase-Space Intrinsic Low Dimensional Manifold and Flamelet Generated Manifold method to as well premixed as non-premixed combustion processes. The innovative objective of this proposal is to introduce these methods in LES (Large Eddy Simulations) codes. These codes will subsequently be used to model Low Emission Combustors of aero-engines. The application of LES codes to model combustors will give a much better insight into the details of the combustion process, and it is intended to apply these methods to develop and improve the new generation of low-emission combustors.
