Maritime industry information infrastructure

Objetivo

The European maritime industry is a large industrial community which is functionally heterogeneous and locally distributed. The maritime industry's R&D co-ordination group (RDCG) has developed a R&D strategy which is formulated in a structured R&D masterplan. An essential part of this commonly agreed R&D strategy is the development and demonstration of an open, safe and efficient Maritime Industry Information Infrastructure which currently does not exist.
MARINFO which will become another element of MARIS, aims at the development and provision of an infrastructure in a stepwise approach beginning with a prototype and leading to an industry wide open and self supporting system accessible to the whole of Europe's maritime industries. The MARINFO work concentrates on selected services which allow evaluation on the following levels, felt to be of most importance to the European maritime industry:
- MARINFO information services make available essential data from shipyards, classifiers and maritime R&D to selected users across Europe. These information services are multimedia based and interactive by nature, extensible, securable and based on off-the-shelf technology;
- MARINFO communication services are based on electronic mail but also allow experimentation with Maritime business processes and workflow management;
- MARINFO security services are of particular importance since control over use and update of valuable and sensitive maritime information is extremely important to both information providers and users. Co-operative alliances between partner on a case to case basis dictate the need for a scaleable security subsystem as it will be developed and used in MARINFO;
- MARINFO standardisation services are required for the efficient best practice co-operation and effective representation of the MARINFO user community. Standardised MARINFO rules and regulations have to address issues such as information layout, structure and content as well as information access rights and update responsibilities. Furthermore, progress will be made towards standardised business procedures and co-operation conventions of the European maritime industry.
