Objective
The principal goal of the Working Group members is to develop II-VI CW room temperature blue diode lasers which have lifetimes in excess of 1000 hours and to demonstrate a pulsed room temperature UV diode laser. There will be additional research of the development of blue VCSELs and single mode lasers using microfabrication techniques.
The programme will address the problems of II-VI/III-V interfaces, the homoepitaxial growth of lasers on II-VI substrates, the p-doping of the wide bandgap quaternary alloys, the improvement of contacts to p-type layers and an investigation on the laser degradation process.
The development of components for visible and UV optoelectronic systems is a major research activity at present. Blue and UV diode lasers will be basic components for new video CD, printing and display systems. At present there are two important materials systems under investigation. Lasers produced from II-VI semiconductors by SONY show CW room temperature operation of over 100 hours and the GaN based III-V diode lasers show pulsed room temperature performance with similar lifetimes.
The Esprit Programme has supported a Working Group (DEBULD) over the last three years for the development of II-VI diode lasers between Heriot-Watt University, Würzburg University and the CNRS-CRHEA laboratory in Valbonne and each group has demonstrated laser devices. The present proposal extends the collaboration to the University of Bremen and the surface physics laboratory, TASC-INFM, in Trieste. Each of these laboratories has base National funding for molecular beam epitaxial growth of laser structures and it is proposed that the combined expertise will be used to demonstrate blue and UV diode lasers for practical industrial lasers. The progress in the USA, Japan and Korea (Samsung) is principally within the research laboratories of powerful IT companies whereas, in Europe, there is no in-house industrial development of these lasers. It is proposed that the Working Group will provide collaborations, exchange of personnel, workshops and a cross-fertilisation of ideas and practical techniques which will maintain a vigorous European II-VI laser diode programme.
