Objectif
The PIE project aims to define a framework allowing software project managers to pilot and efficiently implement on-line dynamic evolution and changes to work activity supported by instances of process models. This will be achieved by providing them with:
- means to re-design the process as a reaction to external events and pressures,
- means to detect and analyse deviations of the real world process from the process supported in the PSE (Process Support Environment),
- means to define and implement relevant evolution and changes in the PSE.
The PIE project considers process evolution driven by the users requirements. Typical users are (project) managers who are not experts in process modelling activities. The project's vision is one of "managers" in business (e.g. in finance companies, in retail, in manufacturing, in utilities, and in services) running their projects using process based technology. The necessary operations will be expressed in terms close to user needs (and user vocabulary), avoiding the necessity of having a profound knowledge of the process modelling language.
Such a system might have, as a minimum, the following components: a control panel displaying the current status of the process performance and enactment to support the monitoring of the process, a decision-support system helping to identify the necessary modifications to be made, and a change support system responsible for implementing them. These components are the principal elements in what is called the meta-process; that is the process by which changes are made to processes. Support to the business evolution strategy is part of the overall meta-process support.
In order to minimise potential risks, the first phase of the project is devoted to an assessment (including prototyping activities) of the foundations of the proposed approach and architecture. During this phase, real user examples will be used to assess the adequacy of the architecture and of the theoretical results.
The second phase of the project will achieve the definition of a methodology and the specification of tools for process evolution and change, integrated in common PSEs supporting "business managers" in their day to day work.
