Objetivo
The WINHOME project aims at building a comprehensive Multi-Media concept based on wireless home distribution, using existing standards and benefiting from the tremendous work previously carried out on HIPERLAN.
At an early stage, the project will use the next generation of digital Set-Top Boxes from GRUNDIG, prototypes of the PCMCIA HIPERLAN products from Dassault, and various standard components figuring the home Multi-Media peripherals, all fitted with the FIREWIRE (IEEE 1394) interface.
A large part will be devoted to the system demonstration. The major experiments will be :
- to characterise the wireless transmission in a home-like environment,
- to carry out simultaneous interactive video transmission, videophone and data transmission (like Internet Web demonstration over a portable PC) ,
- to demonstrate the global service with end user application representatives.
- to carry real size trials while monitoring the customer behaviour.
EUTELSAT, the International Organisation which embeds a large number of telecommunications operators within 45 countries, is deeply involved in Multi-Media activities and in standardisation bodies like DVB, and will actively participate in the consortium as an active Sponsor
The WINHOME project is a very innovative concept bringing together the Information Superhighway coming into the home, a powerful way to provide high quality interactive television, Internet access, videophone communications via Set-Top Box or other Multi-Media Server equipment, and a flexible home distribution via HIPERLAN products, based on the wireless non licensed high throughput communication standard issued by ETSI (ETS 300.652).
This application will contribute to bring HIPERLAN to the mass market and to dramatically decrease the price of this WLAN technology, as well as a way to place the Europe in a leading position due to its pioneering role in wireless high performance standards. It is also a splendid way to promote the new Multi-Media services by bringing a very flexible and powerful wireless data network inside the home.
BRINGING A NEW WAY OF LIVING TO THE CONSUMER
The main benefits are:
- no wired cabling needed,
- transportability, flexibility, upgradability of systems,
- high performance and bandwidth,
- seamless way to provide a multiple output Multi-Media hub,
- lower price resulting from a system composed of a number of peripherals (several TV sets, PCs, videophone,...) interfaced through a wireless link to a system-base like a Set-Top Box and sharing a number of peripheral resources like a printer.
This system will pave the way to a seamless connection between the Information Superhighway and Multi-Media devices in the Home.
WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM THE PROJECT ?
- The customers. Each user will gain considerable advantage in using a powerful seamless Multi-Media system. Due to the adoption of existing standards, each new product will be plugged and played into the home system (whenever necessary) when peripherals, customer budget and new services are required.
- The citizens. They will get direct benefits from the technology derived from the WINHOME project. The new services coming from the Information Superhighway will be accessed by the whole family in a transparent and friendly way for many purposes: leisure, shopping, tele-working, self-education, information.
- The European Multi-Media industry:
technology providers will benefit from the opportunity to bring a large added value to the emerging Multi-Media systems and peripherals,
HIPERLAN industry, will get the opportunity to open a true mass market to HIPERLAN. This will potentially include the United States were bandwidth allocation should enable dissemination of HIPERLAN-based systems,
telecommunications operators, content and service providers, offering Multi-Media applications over a flexible, upgradable and cost effective HOME MULTI-MEDIA SYSTEM.
