Supersymmetric and model independent bilepton searches at the LHC: an experimental and phenomenological approach

Objetivo

In this project we propose a new study of searches for non-standard particles known as bileptons, in the context of the Large-Hadron-Collider (LHC) energies. Bileptons are bosons which couple to two leptons, and which carry two units of lepton number, and are predicted by several beyond Standard Model scenarios, including supersymmetric extensions. A bilepton signal would be strong evidence of new physics and its discovery would change our understanding of Nature. We propose to look for model independent bilepton signals as well as to study supersymmetric extensions that predict the existence of these particles. To achieve this goal the project is divided in three major parts. In the first part we will study detector signatures of models that predict the existence of bileptons, such as the Minimal 331 Model and its supersymmetric version. In the second part we will study the ATLAS experiment model independent discovery potential for bileptons, including its most important backgrounds. The third and most important part will be the LHC data analyses. We should first be guided by existing work with bileptons, as we will use the data as soon as it is available. The performance of new and more realistic simulations in the context of ATLAS will however, be fundamental to understand the collision data results. The project is intended to begin in perfect timing with the LHC restart schedule and has the potential to lead to a major discovery.
