Advanced Techniques; Microwaves Remote Sensing, 1988-1991

Objectif

- Signature Research in the MW region by means of laboratory, and airborne experiments and use of space borne data,

- to improve the knowledge about ecosystem components, its status and dynamics based on MW signatures,

- to develop advanced tools in MW imaging techniques and information extraction from radar data,

- to integrate radar information into application oriented projects

Progress to end 1990

The development and construction of the European Microwave Signature Laboratory, contracted to Siemens (D), passed successfully the Critical Design Review (CDR) in April this year. As a result, Siemens started the production of the individual components. In parallel, the hoste building for the laboratory has been prepared according to the specifications of Siemens. By november 1990 the installation phase at Ispra will be started. All electronic components are ready for installation and the operation sofare for the whole laboratory is under development.

The Interim Microwave Laboratory was used extensively. New approaches to calibrate dispersive polarimetric signatures have been investigated and tested. Two and three dimensional radar imaging techniques have been developed and succefully applied. Software tools for data processing and data analysis were created. Microwave components were tested.

The radar signal processing facility was upgraded, new hardware components added and software tools integrated. The team developed a whole suite of software tools, e.g. a package to analyse interactively multi-channel radar data set (DISTOOL), a tool to enhance radar features, a package to analyse multifrequency polarimetric radar data (POLTOOL). This software POLTOOL has been presented to the public domain and was requested by more than 50 groups world wide for scientific use. Further tools are underevelopment.

The first elements of a radar simulation workstation have been developed, among them a radar wave forest interaction model based on different forest components.

The MAESTRO 1 airborne SAR campaign has been continued by the data delivery, data distribution and data analysis phase. The ground data were compiled, tested, veryfied and integrated into the data base EURACS. The scientific data analysis is still in progress.

Together with ESA and many national teams the initiative towards a European Airborne Remote Sensing Facility has been continued. It resulted in the foundation of a European Economic Interest Grouping (EEIG) named "EARSEF". The ERS-1 pilot projects to be started with the launch of ERS-1 in 1991 have been prepared. More than 30 papers were presented at international conferences and partly published in international journals.

Detailed description of work foreseen in 1991 (expected results)

The main effort will be devoted to : 1) The final installation of the European Microwave Signature Laboratory, its inauguration, its calibration in first radar signature experiments;

2) The start of the ERS-1 pilot projects: -the International Forest Initiative, (IFIT), -the Agricultural Statistics Project; 3) The scientific management of the first multitemporal airborne experiment with "EARSEF" in combination with MAESTRO 2; 4) The presentation of a ERS-1 forest work station; 5) The finalisation of the MAESTRO 1 experiment and continuation into the MAESTRO 2 campaign.

Programme(s)
