Business development & analysis tools

Objectif

World-wide competition among European, American and Asian industries is intensifying due to the ongoing globalisation of markets, forcing companies to rethink their boundaries and to expand international activities. Reengineering business processes across corporate boundaries is an effective response to the new ways of competition: successful companies are building co-operative networks with suppliers, customers, and even competitors. But creating international business networks is not without risk for the partners involved. If a company overlooks simple rules of co-operative work, the success of the whole business network is endangered.

To increase the success rate of these international ventures, a management support tool is urgently needed to help European managers--especially of young entrepreneurial companies--avoid the typical mistakes and pitfalls that lead to failure. None of the existing business planning software packages is adequate for this purpose, and as a result managers are often forced to improvise in developing the organisational structures and procedures of a co-operative venture.

The objective of the BDA-Tools project is to meet this need with a software-based toolkit that provides guidance to mangers planning new business activities. It will specifically address the start-up phase of a young entrepreneurial company or of a virtual enterprise founded by established companies. The toolkit will be designed for planning both within each European country (for companies operating only within their domestic market) and at a pan-European or even global level (for international companies and ventures).

The toolkit will consist of analytical tools (a company classifier to identify and match the characteristics of partner companies, a personality profiler to evaluate the entrepreneur or manager, and a risk assessor to determine critical success factors), business development tools (a business planer and a financial planner), and a database of business information with links to external resources, updated periodically via Internet and/or CD-ROM.

To develop the toolkit's knowledge bases it will be necessary to analyse prior cases, capture the experience gained by companies in former co-operative ventures, and identify critical success factors. The project will therefore be divided into three parts:

Analysis of former co-operative venture projects
Development of a prototype of the management support toolkit
Implementation, trial run and creation of the final version of the toolkit.

In parallel to the implementation of the work plan the consortium will assemble a user interest group, consisting of companies and institutions that will utilise the tool for international project management.

A comprehensive, rigorous exploitation plan will be prepared and implemented by the project partners to ensure the dissemination and commercial success of BDA-Tools. The primary target groups of the project are entrepreneurial SMEs seeking to launch new business as well as larger companies planning to form virtual enterprises.

By using the BDA toolkit to find the right partners, recognise risks and opportunities, and prepare an effective business plan, managers and entrepreneurs will significantly enhance their chances for success.
