Objectif
There is an increasing need for industrial companies to reduce the lead times and costs for industrial products. One of the major technologies that is being used to address these needs is Knowledge Based Engineering (KBE). KBE can be described as the use of advanced software techniques to capture and re-use product and process knowledge in an integrated way, in order to reduce time and cost for engineering applications. In automating, repetitive routine design tasks while integrating multi-disciplinary expertise domains these applications can efficiently support engineering activities and dramatically reduce the cycle time.
Many industrial applications are already or about to be deployed in European industry but the take-up of this technology (and obtaining the associated competitive benefits) is small. There are two main reasons for this, first is the length of time that it takes to develop KBE applications and the second is that KBE still represents a significant investment risk. Several software products are now mature enough to make KBE relatively affordable for an increasing number of companies, but a major risk is the lack of methodology and the absence of support appropriate for the full KBE application life cycle.
To reduce the up-front investment in KBE, the KBE development life-cycle must be reduced and supported by a methodology, and so the following is required,
- A consistent way of capturing and representing product and process knowledge;
- A software tool to assist in the capture, representation and maintenance of this knowledge;
- The ability to automatically generate KBE code from this software tool.
To fulfil these goals, MOKA's objectives are to produce a methodology dedicated KBE and a software tool to support this methodology.
