Objective
Remote sensing of coastal pollution dynamics using ocean colour data.
Progress to end 1991
This is a new activity for 1991, but is heavily based on previous work and experience which has set out to develop models and procedures needed for the investigation of coastal waters, with specific consideration of the problems associated to the use of the Coastal Zone Colour Scanner (CZCS), Landsat's Thematic Mapper (TM) and the Advanced Very high Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR).
Detailed description of work foreseen in 1992 (expected results)
Optimisation of the procedures for the interpretation of the data supplied by SeaWIFS to be launched in 1993 by NASA. In particular :
a) Preliminary analysis of the SeaWIFS performance with respect to both the atmospheric correction and bio-optical algorithms for water quality retrieval (by simulation and sensitivity techniques).
b) Optimisation of an atmospheric correction model.
c) Definition of experimental campaigns for the determination of bio-optical algorithms which match local conditions. Selection of test-site, design of instrumentation, definition of detailed plan of measurements to be carried-out in situ and in the laboratories.
Short description of evolution of work in 1993
Peformance of the foreseen experimental campaigns and analysis of the results. Conclusion of the preparatory work and interpretation of SeaWIFS data as they become available. Further improvement of methods based on evidence of results obtained.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
