ALIAS is a new interaction paradigm for navigating physical spaces, which enriches the 'visitor experience' of a museum or a city by overlapping a further informational dimension onto the surrounding environment, with no gap between the two. ALIAS delivers contextualized, personalized and multimodal presentation, following the visitor's movements. ALIAS is implemented as a telecommunication system which takes advantage of an extensive electronic database about a place, while the user is carrying out everyday working or activities. The user is not restricted to interact with one particular device. He or she can use a mobile palmtop with wireless connection when being on tour or a desktop or laptop in the office or at home In the nomadic setting ALIAS uses small and portable devices (in view of size, weight and power requirements) integrated with a means to allow the user localisation in space (eg radio-communication device). The users can interact with the ALIAS devices through an easy and intuitive interface. They can enter their input by pen-based interaction techniques while the output is mainly communicated via audio. ALIAS results can be envisioned for museums, show rooms, archaeological areas. In particular ALIAS, may be used for innovative tourist services and the civic community more generally. ALIAS allows a more detailed model use. Futhermore it can be upgraded on the move, in order to better fit the user specific requirements. The system maintains a user model and a history of previous interaction and physical movements to dynamically generate effective information presentations, where content, phrasing and media allocation are selected and assembled to best fit the specific user needs and capabilities. Support is offered to help the user understand and appreciate the information he is provided with and to find his bearings in the physical environment.
