IMPACTS OF NEW SERVICES ON THE ARCHITECTURE AND PERFORMANCE OF BROADBAND NETWORKS

Objective

Current status
The COST-257 project is in the start-up-phase. Preparatory work was done during the Management Committee meetings of COST-242 in Paris (June 1996) and Ghent (September 1996). The Inaugural Management Committee meeting of COST-257 was held in Brussels on 29 No-vember 1996. Since that time necessary infrastructure for communication (E-mail exploder, FTP-server and WWW-server) have been installed.
Work planned
The Management Committee will meet three times a year to foster co-operation by presenting the latest research results and contributions. The experience of previous project shows that this form of co-operation allows participants to rapidly identify the most important issues and the most appropriate method of solution. //OBJ_OBJ_TXT
The purpose of the COST 257 Action is to improve the design of broadband multiservice switching systems and network architectures by determining optimal traffic control and resource allocation procedures and by evaluating alternative solutions. The Action aims to identify potential impacts on network architecture and operation of different possible implementations of the new telecommunications services. To achieve this objective, the Action will provide solutions to network design and performance evaluation problems in the form of mathematical models, computer tools or optimisation algorithms. their participation in other related international projects (ACTS, Eurescom, ... ) and standards organisations (ITU, ETSI, ATM forum) informal contacts and the dissemination of results.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
