Objective
STELLA aims at establishing a European centre of excellence for education in Vilnius. In particularly, this will become a site where (i) top-level technical know-how in laser physics and nonlinear optics is made readily accessible to the entire European young-scientist community and (ii) researchers who intend to collaborate in a regime of full and long-term sharing of know-how and expertise can find an appropriate centre-of-mass. This goal will be attained by creating the first ever summer school for high-level training in experimental activity, where world-class researchers will train students directly on sophisticated research equipment. A spectacular science-and-art exhibition, highlighting the unique and unexpected influence that scientific knowledge has on our everyday artistic perception of nature, will have great impact on the quality of training in elementary schools and up, and in public society. Tutoring of Ph.D. students in cutting-edge areas of intersectorial research will be made feasible by relying upon the support of several European specialists, gathered from different research communities and set to work as a single, tightly knit team by means of e-tools for knowledge management. The approach targets the establishment of long-term, stable synergy in training and research by creating a shared and easily accessible knowledge reservoir. With the aim of supporting and preserving the high-level scientific and technical expertise now available in Vilnius and of exploiting its cultural heritage, the project proposes to the scientific community a highly innovative approach to education and research, which de-emphasizes competition among the laboratories in favour of true enhancement of knowledge levels.
