Management of knowledge using integrated tools for SMEs

Objectif

Increasingly companies are realising that the knowledge of their employees is their most valuable asset. Studies show however, that companies are using only 20% of 'their' knowledge on average. Knowledge about integrated manufacturing and about clients, markets and competitors is the key to competitive advantage. Knowledge is an asset which needs to be managed. Knowledge Management (KM) comprises acquiring, analysis, transformation, storage and dissemination of knowledge throughout the complete development and manufacturing process.
From the SME's point of view, KM is a neglected issue, although increasingly European SMEs gain their competitiveness from knowledge intensive services, often relying on single experts who may leave gaps on leaving. SMEs rarely have the resources to employ knowledge engineers or the use of sophisticated and service intensive information technology. Specific IT solutions for SMEs are needed, which are not only inexpensive and pragmatic, but are also aligned with the specific organisational requirements of SMEs. Furthermore solutions are needed covering the overall process chain.
The objective of MAKE-IT-SME is to develop holistic methods and tools for the securing, sharing and further development of engineering and manufacturing knowledge. MAKE-IT-SME will provide methods and an IT solution suitable to the specific needs of SMEs to flexibly manage the knowledge in-house as well as with co-operating partners. An early and thorough integration of IT with means for human resource management and knowledge engineering scenarios will guide this project.
In order to achieve its objectives, relevant company parameters will be analysed and a benchmark will be conducted to identify world-class solutions. For the IT-solution an intranet approach is envisaged, using a commercial tool, such as Notes (Lotus) or LinkWorks (Digital) in combination with an appropriate database. These IT-based tools will be integrated with methods and structures, enabling the capturing and formalisation of expert knowledge as the key bottleneck of the overall process of KM.
