Open microprocessor architectures are brought within the reach of small companies by a processor development platform, RANDOM, based on open technologies and standards. Although the advances in semiconductor technology has made the development of customized core-based systems on a chip a practical option for many embedded applications, small and medium sized enterprises (SME) are currently blocked from this technology due to the very high costs involved with designing and prototyping such systems. The RADOM system provides an affordable development platform that combines rapid prototyping with component based design, using technologies that enable control of complexity and design porting to very large scale integration (VLSI) implementation. RADOM consists of a set of prototyping modules ,including a field programmable gate array (FPGA) module, a microprocessor module and an input/output (I/O) module, that can be used to implement system components that communicate via a standard bus. It is also supported by design management software that models a system as a set of reusable components; components that correspond to VHDL code, to portable C code based on a real time OS or to standard components like UART, DAC/ADC, Modem etc. This enables the designer to describe the system and test/demonstrate the design through prototyping without having to built new hardware.
