Impact of it in industry

Objetivo

GLOBE-2 is an Accompanying Measure in Domain 7 of ESPRIT, with the Objective of providing clear and quantitative evidence of the massive impact of Information Technology on a wide range of business processes and products in all industrial sectors.

The scope will emphasize the process perspective, but it will also encompass the product one because Information Technology can revolutionize traditional products - for example, by replacing products that are essentially mechanical by better products that are primarily electronic - and this in turn has a revolutionary impact on the design, manufacturing and management processes for those products.
This overall goal is then divided into two specific objectives:
To provide a maximum of six case studies of IT having a major impact on a specific business process or product. Each case study must provide a single concrete example that clearly demonstrates, in quantitative terms, the major impact of IT on one or more characteristics of a single process or product of an individual company.
To provide broader quantitative evidence of the impact of IT on complete industry sectors. There must be quantitative data showing the impact of IT on a range of industry sectors, and both the original sources and derivation of that data must be clearly traceable.
The six case studies will be obtained by direct interaction with businesses where IT has had a major impact on either a process or a product. The broad quantitative data will be obtained by examining a wide range of relevant documents and industrial literature to find reports on real industrial cases including quantitative assessment of the impact of Information Technologies.
The following Final Results are planned:
A Collection of Micro-cases stored in a RDBMS publicly accessible through the Web. At least 300 micro-cases gathered from existing literature are expected, each one providing clear and quantitative evidence of the impact of Information Technology on either a specific product or a specific business process.
A Methodology Booklet explaining the methodological approach taken in the study to assess the impact of Information Technology and to analyse both microcase and big cases. It should allow other people to perform similar studies, eventually extending the GLOBE-2 results.
A Full Report, including a description of the methodology adopted in the study, the complete collection of micro-cases, the result of the analysis of the six cases studies, and a Conclusion chapter drawing both general and sector-specfic conclusions on the quantitative impact of Information Technology on both products and processes in the context of the various industrial sectors.

A glossy brochure, summarising the Project results in a graphically attractive way.
The results will benefit to a wide range of businesses in a wide range of industry sectors, providing both a general benchmark and a structured approach against which individual businesses can assess their own use of Information Technology and way of assessing their impact, together with an indication of best practice in the exploitation of that technology.
The results will also be of direct interest and benefit to the European Commission. Quantitative data on the impact of Information Technology across industry sectors will assist the Commission in its mission to promote the effective use of Information Technology and the Information Society in general.

Programa(s)
