Objetivo

In response to the Recommendations of the Committee of Ministers to Member States (No R(2001)13; R(2000)5; R(97)17), Articles 3, 4 & 10 of the Convention on Human Rights and Biomedicine, Article 35 of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, the WHO Cancer Report 2003, the WHO report on Strategies to Improve and Strengthen Cancer Control Programmes in Europe, 2004, The Global Forum for Health Research, 10/90 Report on Health Research 2003-2004, and the objectives of the 2004-2005 Work Programme, the aim of this Coordination Action (CA) is to reduce the existing fragmentation between cancer Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) research programmes in Europe, thus improving effective use of cancer CPGs and promoting equitable access to higher quality cancer care. Cancer is an increasing, ageing-related major burden of disease. Survival rates differ notably across Europe, demonstrating inequality in healthcare. The translation of research results into evidence-based patient-oriented CPGs is important for informing healthcare professionals, patients and policymakers about appropriate best clinical practice. Many CPGs research programmes exist but the results from the CoCanCPG Specific Support Action (ERAS-CT-2003-003239) show that there is duplication and fragmentation. Building on the achievements of the CoCanCPG SSA, this CA will create a solid framework for sharing information and knowledge and for benchmarking of best practice to foster cooperative capacity building and identify common priorities for CPG research. Based on an analysis of common strategic issues and solutions to potential barriers, the project will implement a sustainable structure for cooperation and joint pan European management of cancer CGP research. Joint activities will be pilot tested by the 12 consortium members. Based on these experiences, the consortium will propose a durable long-term structure for cooperation beyond the lifetime of the project and define an action plan for its implementation.
