eInfrastructure for thalassaemia research Network

Objective

The aim of ITHANET is to strengthen the Euromediterranean community of researchers in molecular and clinical research into thalassaemia and related haemoglobinopathies and to enhance its scientific potential using the existing and emerging infrastructures and tools of European research networks (GEANT, Grids). Aiming at their effective and efficient use as a means for coordination of existing research activities and also as a base for future collaborative projects, ITHANET introduces a common approach to these infrastructures of information and communication technologies.

Workpackages of the project include development of common resources to serve thalassaemia and other haemoglobinopathies researchers as well as actions aimed at improving the access to these resources from the individual partner sites. Participants of the project include all major European research institutions active in haemoglobinopathies research as well as a number of collaborating partner institutions from non-EU Mediterranean and Black Sea countries. Participation of these non-EU institutions is justified by the fact that research into various genetic types of thalassaemia with various geographic distributions is necessary for proper care for thalassaemic patients with genetic origin from these geographical areas.

Using eInfrastructure tools to consolidate and strengthen a specific research community with a specific geographic distribution (partners from east Mediterraneans and from the western EU countries) and with a specific research topic (a field on the borderline between molecular genetics and clinical science), ITHANET aims to create new opportunities for high-profile, high- impact collaborative research in these regions of the European Research Area.
