The transfer of valuable and practically usable knowledge and experiences concerning business processes, business innovations and technology solutions, as well as the change processes needed to implement them, is one of the most desirable ways to strengthen the competitiveness of enterprises of any size and sector in Europe. Traditional ways to transfer business and innovation knowledge are limited to certain levels of dissemination. To overcome the deficits and especially to improve the application of the disseminated knowledge within companies, new types of transfer activities and products, which focus on learning and adoption of innovation knowledge on the user's side, are needed. BUSINESS-LINC will develop multimedia case studies on innovative IT solutions (i.e. in the field of Electronic Commerce) to support Business Innovation Processes within European Companies. The case studies will be provided through sustainable online and offline-services using Internet, CD-ROM, and other means of communicating with customers. The project started in April 98. First prototypes of the interactive case studies will be available for testing and evaluation in the first half of 1999. In the year 2000, commercial business innovation services will be established together with a publisher/service provider. In contrast to traditional paper-based case studies, interactive multimedia cases have the following advantages: - Facilitation and acceleration of knowledge transfer through multimedia components: the user-friendliness and the customisation implicit in the new learning technologies/approaches also support the diffusion of interactive cases among users who are not confident with technical approaches. - Reaching new types of potential users: new methods for knowledge transfer using new technologies can reach new types of potential users, such as SMEs, which cannot afford to attend traditional events (courses, conferences, consultants). - Flexible medium without constraints regarding time and place: the case studies can be used on-demand in the office, in seminars, at home etc., whenever people have time and motivation to learn. Furthermore, they can be used for real-time problem solving. A person, who has to innovate a process or an organisation in a certain situation, can first try to find a case study that fits the particular problem situation best. - Issues have not to be learned in a sequential way. - Access to knowledge and experiences via information networks meets professionals needs: an inter-linked environment will facilitate identifying and exploring the really relevant parts for learners without producing "overheads". - Learning and using knowledge coincide: selected information can be called up at any time within the companies when a problem occurs.
