Objective
This project is directed to the development of kinetic, thermodynamic and modelling studies on the interaction of chitosan and metal ions. Chitin will be obtained from different sources aiming to isolate alfa-chitin and beta-chitin. Highly deacetylated chitosans will be prepared by carrying out the deacetylation reactions of chitin.
Depolymerized chitosan and chitoolisacharides will be prepared by the controlled depolymerization of the chitosan samples, to determine the dependence of their complexation properties on the average molecular weight. These samples will be processed in different physical forms aiming the preparation of materials having high specific superficial areas.
All the samples of chitosan and chitooligosaccharides as well as the corresponding materials processed in different physical forms will be characterized in terms of their chemical structures and dimensions. These materials will be employed to study the kinetics and thermodynamic aspects of the interaction involving chitosan or chitooligosaccharides and metal ions of cadmium and cooper.
It will be also important to determine the predominant ionic species of each metal as a function of the pH in the optimal conditions of complexation. The main objective is the determination of the chitosan/metal ion complexation constants and the thermodynamic and kinetic parameters corresponding to enthalpy, entropy and activation energy.
The characteristics of the chitosan/metal ion complexes, including the physical form, chemical structure, morphology and crystallinity, will be determined. Some properties of the chitosan/metal ion complexes, such as their thermal stability, will be also investigated.
The molecular modelling studies aiming the determination of the geometry of the chitosan/metal ion complexes will be developed in collaboration with the Laboratoire de Physico-Chimie et Modélisation Moleculaire du Faculté de Pharmacie de l'Université de Lyon.
