Descripción del proyecto
Digitising content for Europeana
‘‘Digitising Contemporary Art’ (DCA) is a 30-month digitisation project for contemporary art, i.e. art made after 1945 - a kind of cultural heritage still largely missing from Europeana which is a single access point for European culture.
DCA will create a digital body of high-quality reproductions of 26,921 artworks - paintings, photographs, sculptures, installations, videos and 1,857 contextual documents, which will become accessible and retrievable through Europeana; not only through the use of metadata and thumbnails, but also direct links to large-sized reproductions of each item. DCA will ensure that the rights to all available digital content will be cleared. The content provided, including masterpieces from key artists of most European countries, will fill a gap in Europeana‘s content supply.
Digitising Contemporary Art (DCA) is a 30-month digitisation project for contemporary art, i.e. art made after 1945 - a type of cultural heritage that is largely missing in Europeana. It comprises paintings, photographs, sculptures, installations, videos... DCA will create a digital corpus of high-quality reproductions of 23.727 artworks and 3.742 contextual documents. It will make this content accessible and retrievable through Europeana; not only metadata and thumbnails, but also direct links to large-sized reproductions of each item. Seen the strong interest in contemporary art, DCA's content is of interest for a broad general public. It fills a gap in Europeana's content supply. DCA's corpus includes masterpieces from key artists of most European countries. It serves as a reflection on the art of today and its place within Europe's cultural heritage. The artworks belong to institutions that need support for their digitisation actions and their contribution to Europeana. The 21 collections stem from 12 European countries: 17 stem from countries that limp behind in making their cultural heritage accessible through Europeana (10 from Tier 1 and 7 from Tier 2 countries). The corpus will contain texts and images, as well as video and sound material – both still underrepresented in the portal.DCA will respect Europeana's technical specifications. For the metadata mapping and the aggregation DCA will build on the experiences and tools developed by its partners in European and other projects. DCA's ICT-solutions and implementations will ensure that the digital content will remain available for Europeana after the end of the project. The expected impact is a better access to contemporary art and an improved understanding of the importance of contemporary art for Europe's cultural heritage. DCA's digitisation action will also contribute to the preservation of the artworks. DCA comprises 25 partners from 12 countries; some were key partners in previous European projects.
