Development and Implementation of Magnesium sheets in A/C

Objective

"The main objective of DIMAG project is to develop and produce magnesium Demonstrator for aircraft after answering all given aviation criteria and requirements. By achieving this objective, DIMAG will facilitate obtaining the Clean Sky objectives of reduction in weight, fuel consumption, emissions of CO2 and NOX and the use of fully recyclable material. Since magnesium 100% recyclable and is 35% lighter than aluminium a replacement of aluminium parts with magnesium parts will contribute to all the above mentioned goals.

The main idea to be reflected in the work program is the use of several magnesium forming and surface treatment technologies, which successfully implemented on conventional alloys (i.e. AZ31, AZ80, etc.), but for new options of chemical compositions, especially for alloys with rare earth (RE) elements (such as WE43).

The project activity will use a drawingand bending techniques, including riveting, and surface protection processes which should be chrome-free provided, while using the above mentioned new magnesium alloys.
The work plan will be divided into three work packages; each deals with a particular type of process. The processes will be examined according to technological Demonstrators offered by the ITD topic leader - a Shelf Removal Assy – Radio Rack.
The project's work plan will be broken down into the following work packages:
1. Deep drawing and bending of WE43 magnesium sheet
2. Joining of magnesium sheets, by mechanical riveting, including the examination of bi-metal galvanic effect (since rivets are usually made of aluminium alloy)
4. Cleaning and finishing solutions applied on WE43 and other special magnesium alloys."

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
