High level integrated design environment for dependability

Objective

The main objective of HIDE is the creation of an integrated environment for the practitioner designer, allowing him to use UML (Unified Modelling Language) as front-end for the specification of both the system and the user requirements. The designer can easily validate his design, since the entire background mathematics will be hidden from him. From the basic UML model automatic transformations will derive the individual mathematical models for formal and quantitative validation. The results gained will be back annotated for presentation into the same UML model without any interaction of the user. HIDE eliminates the need for both a specific expertise in abstract mathematics and the tedious manual re-modelling of the system for mathematical analysis.

The major objective of Phase 1 is an experimental platform for the validation of the conceptual aspects of HIDE, while Phase 2 serves for the pre-prototyping of a commercial version.
Results
HIDE is the first attempt to directly bridge the gap between a practice-oriented CASE methodology and sophisticated mathematical tools. At the end of the project a complete prototype of HIDE and an assessment of the market potential will be provided.

The practical innovation is the incorporation of the crucial aspects of formal validation, performability and dependability analysis, and synthesis support without the need of special skills or extreme efforts by the designer. The major scientific value of this project is the know-how in using existing mathematics and solution methodologies in problem formulation and solution, and in the general methodology of model transformation and integration into the practical design process. The openness of the approach allows the further integration of other validation and analysis tools.
Approach
To obtain useful results quickly, the HIDE software will be based on the commercial UML-based tools Innovator and UMLNice, made by the industrial project partners.

The approach to achieve the objectives of Phase 1 will incorporate the specification and assessment of the HIDE method (modelling techniques and transformation techniques) and the specification of the HIDE environment (architectural framework, HIDE components, and requirements on external tools). A demonstrator will prove the feasibility of the idea of HIDE and serve for a rough evaluation of the efficiency of the approach. The specification of a representative pilot application is a preparatory step for Phase 2; it will point out specific requirements and constraints needed for the enhancement of the tool.
