CO2VOLC: Quantifying the global volcanic CO2 cycle
Final Report Summary - CO2VOLC (CO2VOLC: Quantifying the global volcanic CO2 cycle)
The ERC-funded CO2Volc project was created with the aim of improving our understanding of how much CO2 is emitted from volcanoes. We produced completely new laser-based measurement techniques to measure volcanic gases and used these in a major airborne campaign in Indonesia to measure CO2 emissions from ~20 volcanoes. Our results show that CO2 emissions can only be at most ~3% of the current anthropogenic CO2 emissions, and that most subducted carbon is released through arc volcanism in the Banda-Sunda arc.
