Unraveling the cellular sulfenome: a search for new redox-regulated pathways
Final Report Summary - SULFENIC (Unraveling the cellular sulfenome: a search for new redox-regulated pathways)
The key goals of this project were to investigate protein sulfenylation, to build a database of proteins with sensitive cysteine residues that could become sulfenylated and to discover new methionine sulfoxide reductases. These goals have been achieved. Our research led us to discover new sulfenylated proteins in the cytoplasm and in the periplasm of bacteria, to identify more than 200 new cytoplasmic proteins with redox sensitive cysteine residues and to discover a new methionine sulfoxide reductase system, MsrPQ, protecting methionine residues from oxidation in the bacterial cell envelope by using electrons from the respiratory chain.
