Objetivo
The aim of the proposal is to obtain funding for restoring molecular epidemiology research previously performed in the Institute of Oncology in Gliwice, Poland. The molecular epidemiology merges molecular biology techniques with epidemiologic methods in order to use biomarkers in human tissues as indicators of potential risk of cancer and other genetic-based diseases. The use of biomarkers allows for better understanding of environmental causes of diseases, an early detection and prevention as well as for better treatment of the disease.
Since 1989 till 1997 the molecular epidemiology projects were successfully run in the Institute of Oncology in Gliwice in cooperation with Columbia University (US) and six top European laboratories from Finland, The Netherlands, Norway, Germany, Great Britain and Sweden. These studies were focused on the estimation of genetic damage caused by environmental factors. Obtained results have clearly shown that polluted environment has a potential carcinogenic impact on human health. The results were published, between 1990 and 2001, in a series of 26 original papers.
Here we propose to renew the molecular epidemiology research in Gliwice starting from the follow-up studies on previously evaluated populations. At the same time we will assess the predictive value of the biomarkers, which were developed to evaluate the risk of cancer. We also plan to start the new biomarker studies performed as a hospital-based case-control research. To facilitate the molecular epidemiology studies, we will create the Bio-bank ("Silesian Bio-bank") for storing and processing human samples to be used in ex vivo research. This facility is necessary for our scientific projects but also it will serve other Polish and foreign institutions. The Bio-bank create d in Poland could be a meeting spot for scientists from United Europe, performing molecular epidemiology studies.
