DULBECCO TELETHON INSTITUTE-INTERNATIONAL MOBILITY FOR POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH TRAINING

Final Report Summary - DTI-IMPORT (DULBECCO TELETHON INSTITUTE-INTERNATIONAL MOBILITY FOR POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH TRAINING)

The aim of the Dulbecco Telethon International Postdoctoral Programme (DTI-IMPORT) was to enhance the international dimension of the Postdoctoral fellows operating in the Telethon Institutes (DTI, TIGEM and TIGET) and provide an excellent training to experienced researchers in Biomedical Sciences to form a new class of international researchers. DTI-IMPORT postdoctoral program has produced the generation of an innovative and international community of young Scientists.
The programme was based on the recruitment of highly skilled incoming and reintegrating experienced researchers through a gender-balanced, transparent and meritocratic selection process, according to the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers of the European Charter for Researchers. The programme has promoted the mobility and the interaction of researchers based on the fundamental principle of not constraining science into geographical borders.
To achieve this goal first of all we set up a dedicated website: https://www.telethon.it/en/scientists/dti-import by which applicants had found all the information concerning the eligibility and the selection process and the procedure for the on line submission.
Furthermore, in order to achieve the maximum visibility and reach out to the most promising candidates, the program and its Calls for Applications has been publicized and promoted both nationally and abroad trough:
a) Inserts published on specialized web sites (European Commission's Euraxess1, EMBO's Life Sciences Mobility Portal, selected scientific societies);
b) Advertising in top scientific journals of the biomedical sciences (Nature, Science, Cell etc);
c) Diffusing fliers to the several international collaborators of each of the Telethon PIs;
d) Posting the call for applications into websites dedicated to postdoctoral positions advertisement (Nature Jobs, The Scientists).
We organized two different commissions, composed of three international recognized scientists. Role of the first commission was the evaluation of the application of each eligible candidate, while the second commission have evaluated the single project of the candidates and their interviews.
Of particular significance was the ethical aspect concerning the projects of the fellows recruited. For this reason, an ethical report was prepared in December of each year and forwarded to the Commission Officer, ensuring that all research activities comply with national and FP7 fundamental ethical principles and abide by the guidelines of the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies.
From January 2013 to November 2017 four calls have been open, lasting each for 6 months. 62 applications have been received during the first call, 30 applications during the second, 111 during the third, and 65 during the fourth.
As result of the 4 calls, 19 fellows have been recruited: 4 fellows in the first call, 2 in the second, 9 in the third and 4 in the fourth call.
At the end of the Programme the Telethon Foundation have enrolled 19 postdoctoral fellows from all over the word, contributing to the development of Research Careers in the European Research Area.
