Objectif The underlying challenges in mobile and wireless systems are the unavoidable interference in wireless environments, and the time variance of the system. In general, high data rates give rise to frequency selective propagation whereas mobility induced Doppler shifts introduce time selectivity in wireless links. In order to develop efficient systems in these environments, an engineering solution is to use training signals. We analyse the use of training and develop design methodologies for these systems. As time and frequency selectivity increase, the optimal use of the training becomes more crucial. In particular, we study the combined effect of several factors at play in multi-carrier systems, in order develop a global framework of analysis. We study how these factors compare to a single carrier system operating over the same channel, in order to explore the gains of using multi-carrier transmission in a training-aided system. We also investigate the role of training in time-division duplex (TDD) systems. When beam forming in the forward link is used, the training in reverse and forward links have a unique interaction in such systems. We develop novel analyses and design techniques for training-aided TDD systems based on this interaction.
