Final Report Summary - DISKNET (Distributed Knowledge-Based Energy Saving Networks)

GENERAL SUMMARY
Project DISKNET, has completed a scientific exchange programme in the field of designing and optimising distributed networks for efficient energy supply, management and use. The project has addressed three aspects of sustainability – environmental, economic and societal, by research and knowledge management for improved efficiency of energy supply, conversion and utilisation. The objective of the project has been to stimulate a long term research collaboration between academic organisations from the European Research Area (ERA) (Hungary, Greece and Croatia) and leading academic partners from third countries (Ukraine, Jordan and Morocco), in the area of energy systems engineering and energy supply chains. The key goals of the project have been achieved:
• A well-structured mobility programme through two-way exchanges has been completed, with a few modifications dictated by safety concerns
• A series of open training courses, seminars and workshops
• Substantial body of published joint research
• The partners from DISKNET have already submitted a new project proposal for continued partnership and have formed the core of future consortia for joint projects.

WORK PERFORMED
Following the scientific programme of the project, the implemented secondments have resulted in a significant body of scientific results and training events. There have been joint publications from almost every secondment. Also, some of the delivered workshops and open courses have been arranged at high-profile international conferences – e.g. the SDEWES series, which has significantly boosted the outreach level.

MAIN RESULTS
The implemented secondments, training and other activities have achieved a wide coverage of topics related to the project objectives. There have been 26 (11 in Period 1 +15 in Period 2) journal publications and 33 (23 in Period 1 +10 in Period 2 (conference presentations. The topics covered by the published research include:
• Desalination Plants Driven by Renewable Energy
• Geothermal energy utilisation, Solar and Wind energy utilisation and other renewables
• Efficient use of waste heat
• Data acquisition and analysis
• Evaluation of the side effects on the environment from energy supply and use activities
• Optimisation of renewable energy capture and supply systems
• Energy demand-side management
• Regional Energy Planning, Energy Supply Chains
• Regional energy and water supply
• CO2 capture

FINAL RESULTS, EXPECTED POTENTIAL IMPACT AND USE
The project results are expected to influence very much in the first place the research community as has been demonstrated by the successful workshop venues and published research. In addition, the partners have agreed to pool curricula and teaching practices.
