EU-Ukrainian Mathematicians for Life Sciences

Final Report Summary - EUMLS (EU-Ukrainian Mathematicians for Life Sciences)

Mathematics for Life Sciences: an EU project in the PEOPLE Programme joining research teams from Germany, Norway, Italy and Ukraine

The project EU-Ukrainian Mathematicians for Life Sciences (EUMLS, grant agreement PIRSES-GA-2011-295164-EUMLS) is the result of a successful proposal submitted to the 2011 IRSES call (Marie Curie International Research Staff Exchange Scheme) in the PEOPLE part of the EU 7th Framework Programme.

One of the most important developing areas of the life sciences is in the application of mathematics. A number of factors are combining to bring the emerging field of biomathematics to the fore: the vast amount of biological data now available due to advancing hardware techniques such as modern genomics, the increase of readily available computing power for data analysis, the recent development of mathematical models and tools allowing new explorations into nonlinear mechanisms in biology, and renewed interest in in-silico modelling due to the ethical and practical considerations required from modern testing methods.

The goal of the 4-year EUMLS project, running from April 1, 2012 to March 31, 2016 with a budget of € 389 500, was to contribute to overcoming the historical communication and cross-disciplinary barriers that exist between the biosciences and mathematics through a comprehensive programme realizing a total of 205 months of research exchanges between five premier Ukrainian mathematical institutes and three partner institutions in Germany, Italy, and Norway, active in different aspects of computational life sciences. A fourth partner institution SIMULA from Oslo entered the consortium in 2014.

Several joint teams have been pursuing research in mathematics and computational life sciences, building on staff exchanges between the Ukrainian and the other partners, covering topics like for example the application of ordinal time series to EEG, tools for the accumulation and classification of experimental anatomical and biological data, modelling of unsteady blood flows in the aorta, and several more. So far, the research efforts resulted in more than 50 scientific publications which have already appeared or at least been submitted. A couple of further papers are in preparation. The project also supported an all-Ukrainian seminar on mathematics and medicine.

Main pillars of the project were annual workshop events open to all interested researchers, also to those not belonging to the project teams, held in Ukraine to discuss the joint research topics. The first workshop took place at the Institute of Mathematics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Kiev, Ukraine from September 3 to 14, 2012. The second workshop was organized by the Institute of Hydromechanics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and held in Olenivka, Crimea, Ukraine from September 5 to 10, 2013. Due to the political situation in Ukraine the third workshop scheduled in Donezk for September 2014 had to be cancelled. The third workshop with almost 70 participants took place in Rivne in the western part of Ukraine from September 15 to 19, 2015. The final conference of the project was held in Hasenwinkel near Lübeck from March 07 to 11, 2016 with more than 50 participants.

Up-to-date project information remains available on the project web site http://www.math.uni-luebeck.de/EUMLS/

The partners are committed to a structured scientific collaboration lasting well beyond the project, based on the joint research undertaken and the annual joint workshop series that hopefully can be continued. We are glad to report that three new international projects based on the collaboration in EUMLS have been initiated:
1. Approximation Methods for Molecular Modelling and Diagnosis Tools (AMMODIT), H2020-MSCA-RISE-2014 Project number 645672 (2015-19),
2. Modeling, Analysis, and Approximation Theory toward applications in tomography and inverse problems, funded by the Volkswagen-Foundation as Trilateral Partnerships - Cooperation Projects between Scholars and Scientists from Ukraine, Russia and Germany (2016-18) and
3. Approximation of Functions and Fourier Multipliers and their applications (AFFMA) H2020-MSCA-IF-2015 Project number 704030 (2016-18).
