Sport across international boundaries: building knowledge through shared understanding

Final Report Summary - SPORT-BOUND (Sport across international boundaries: building knowledge through shared understanding)

The project focused on promoting collaborative sport management research in three key areas: the economics of sport, the social impact of sport and the commercial development of sport.

The project was initially created to:

• Establish an active international community and effective communication channel for the teams to cooperate on global sports management topics;
• Integrating the complementary expertise of the European and Chinese teams to devise best practice case studies and standards to address the multi faceted requirements of managing sports; ensuring a positive, sustainable impact;
• Establishing an EU/China research hub specifically addressing current challenges in sport to operate as a central resource dispensary on research in the area;
• Leveraging the geographical characteristics of the teams to evaluate and disseminate the research outcomes in different regions of the EU and China.

Some of the project’s highlights have included: the staging of an international sport conference in Paris, France; the hosting of special workshop sessions on sport management in Asia at the European Association of Sport Management’s annual conference; and coverage of the research live on Chinese state television – CCTV. Furthermore, several visits to appropriate venues were made, for example by a Chinese delegation to Paris Saint Germain, and by a British delegation to the Bird’s Nest Stadium in Beijing. Such activities have enabled researchers to produce outputs including conference papers and journal articles, and have also led to stakeholder engagement (for instances, with the media, and with decision-makers).
