Objective
Axiom addresses scientific and technical challenges in the analysis, organisation, searching and manipulation of digital image streams for the digital cinema industry. Film or cinema is a driving force for the entertainment industry, and the movie chain is now going digital, from origination through distribution to display, producing a massive increase in data volumes and work methods. Automated content-based access to visual media is now a major field of research activity. The notion is to allow access to media in the same way that Google allows access to text, without the need for keywords.
Image and video processing algorithms are being developed that attempt to 'understand' media in some sense and so suggest media snippets in response to user queries. The electronic media industry has yet to implement these ideas, because the research community has focussed on the wrong questions. AXIOM plans to solve the problem by bringing together an academic partner, Trinity College Dublin (TCD) Sigmedia Group, which is expert in video processing and content based access, with an industrial partner (The Foundry) specialising in the development of film post-production software. The purpose of this collaboration is to research techniques for content analysis and the use of content-based information to direct low level image and video processing tools for creative postproduction.
The three-year project involves exchanges, in both directions, of a total of four experienced and two very experienced Fellows in a structured programme of training and research in algorithmic methods, GPU programming, and software plug-in development. It grows from four years of work between the partners and is designed to lead to a long-term structured collaboration. The outcomes will include new algorithms, software plug-ins, research publications, and employment opportunities for highly skilled researchers capable of innovating in academia and industry.
