Galway laboratory for biomedical data mining

Objectif

This project will establish and develop a new interdisciplinary research lab for Data Mining in Biomedical Science in the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG). This is a new area of research expertise for the university. It will integrate and extend research being conducted by several separate research groups. Data mining involves a range of techniques that are concerned with extracting interesting knowledge from datasets that are typically large and unstructured.

This knowledge can take the form of rules, patterns, structure or associations. To be interesting they must be non-obvious, comprehensible, meaningful and potentially informative or useful. Three biomedical application streams have been identified, each involving a different research group that has a specific need for data mining technologies:
- Genomics: Identifying Patterns in Genomic Data;
- Biophotonics: Analysis of Raman and Fluorescence Spectroscopy Data;
- Biosensor Monitoring: Mining of Medical Telemetry Data.

The project goal will be achieved through three principal work components:
- Inward knowledge transfer, involving Experienced Researchers conducting research into data mining for each application stream
- Embedding of knowledge in the university and dissemination to the wider community, through seminars, publications, and a new website of tools and technologies for biomedical data mining
- Development of research collaborations with leading international research groups through research training secondments of by project participants.

The scientific aim of this project is to establish a community of researchers in NUIG with an international profile in biomedical data mining and advance the state of the art. More broadly, it will contribute to NUIG's capacity to perform research, help to improve the competitiveness within the knowledge economy of this Objective 1 Region, and promote research as a profession.
