Objective
This proposed project will support the community of over 600 European SME spring manufacturers with a toolkit for innovation, and enable novel new spring designs. The consortium truly believe that this programme of structured research, dissemination & training will revolutionise the whole sector and design process, and provide the large community of SME manufacturers with the knowledge & know-how necessary to individualise their strategy & approach with increased performance & durability products, utilising up to 20% less material, and driving up to 7% from the manufactured costs.
The breakthroughs in new applicable knowledge and technology provided by this project include: Enhanced scientific knowledge of residual & applied stresses New prediction models to optimise designs for improved weight & reliability Next generation software design tool, integral to CAD/FEA & MKS Prototype system using advanced camera & stroboscopic technologies Prototype adapted X-ray machine for residual stress analysis Revised EU and new Global standards This will enable EU spring manufacturers to compete more evenly with non-domestic competition, regaining more than the 91 Mn of lost revenue over the last decade, by minimising the price differential & providing superior specification & performance springs that cannot be matched technically by these non-European manufacturers.
This will position EU spring manufacturers as added value suppliers who are integrated & embedded into the value chain of supply essential for the Large Enterprises (LE), therefore supporting the industry to increase market share by a total of 5% over 5 years, and therefore ultimately achieve an additional 114 Mn/annum in revenue & sales, and generate an increase in employment in the sector of an additional 960 jobs.
