FC Chain: an interdisciplinary programme for overcoming technical, social and market issues of solid oxide fuel cells energy systems

Objectif

Fuel cells are electrochemical devices that produce electricity through an electrochemical process, without combustion. As a consequence, all the combustion related pollutants are absent. Moreover, these devices present very high efficient, thus enabling a strong fuel consumption reduction. Although natural gas is currently the preferred fuel, a variety of alternative fuels are suitable for exploitation in high temperature fuel cells, and in particular solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC).

Besides the environmental benefits, there are safety issues related to the use of such devices for electricity production. It is worldwide recognized, in fact, that a substantial reliability improvement is achievable through the so-called distributed generation scenario, i.e. small-medium energy conversion systems located close to the end user, rather than a centralized big-size power plant, located in a remote area.

However, traditional energy systems are strongly influenced by the system size and the high efficiency achievable for combined power plants (close to 55%) cannot be met by small-medium size systems.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classe les projets avec EuroSciVoc, une taxonomie multilingue des domaines scientifiques, grâce à un processus semi-automatique basé sur des techniques TLN. Voir: https://op.europa.eu/en/web/eu-vocabularies/euroscivoc.
