Objective
The project aims at supporting the development of research and educational activities in Cosmology and Computational Astrophysics at the Catania Astrophysical Observatory (hereafter OACt). Despite the impetuous development of Cosmology during the last ten years, very limited resources have been dedicated to the study of the origin and evolution of the Large Scale Structure of the Universe at academic research Institutions in Southern Italy (with some notable exceptions). Some research activity in Cosmology, both in the field of the Early Universe and of the study of the post-recombination Universe, has already been attempted at OACt, and there exists already a small group of experienced researchers. Moreover, there exists a demand from undergraduate and graduate students, who are attracted towards this very dynamical research field. At the moment, this demand can very partially be satisfied by the existing researchers: a coherent Transfer of Knowledge project aiming at filling this cultural gap is then needed. Despite this cultural gap, a series of technological investments realized during the past years has provided OACt with top class computing resources, which would allow experienced specialists in theoretical cosmology to exploit their computational know-how to perform high-level numerical simulations projects, together with the local experienced researchers. This collaboration will allow an effective implementation of the knowledge transfer objectives. The project envisages also a complementary training of local experienced researchers at two research Institutions abroad, to allow the professional re-qualification of experienced researchers. In the long term, the project aims at reaching a twofold purpose: a)establish a Theoretical Cosmology and Computational Astrophysics research group at OACt, which will contribute to analyse data coming from many European space- and ground based astronomical projects; b)contribute to expand and reinforce the ERA.
