Transfer of knowledge in biodiversity research and conservation

Objetivo

This 4-year project is aimed at developing the scientific capabilities of Mammal Research Institute of Polish Academy of Sciences (MRI) in Bialowieza (Poland) in biodiversity research and conservation. By inviting 2 very experienced and 3 experienced researchers from abroad and transferring their knowledge to our staff and students, we aim at enriching biodiversity studies with up-to-date approaches of conservation genetics, ecological modeling, and GIS. The recruited fellows will:
- join the on-going research projects,
- deliver a series of lectures, seminars, and short courses for the host's staff and students,
- participate in long-term training of students.

At least four scientists from MRI will spend one year each at the University of Aberdeen, UK. MRI employs 40 persons, including 19 researchers. Its research profile covers mammalian biology, ecology of animal communities and forest ecosystems, population and conservation genetics, ecological physiology, biodiversity, and environmental history. MRI is located in the Less Favored Region (Podlaskie, Eastern Poland). In terms of biodiversity, it is one of the best-preserved regions in the EU, with four national parks and about 25% of the area designed as NATURA 2000 sites. Location of MRI by the world-famous Bialowieza National Park (UNESCO's Man and Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site) makes it very attractive for foreign scientists.

This project will build upon MRI's experience as EU's Centre of Excellence in Biodiversity Conservation and Mammal Research. The project will contribute to the objectives of the ERA through increased mobility of researchers, identifying and strengthening the scientific excellence in Europe, and improving the coordination of national research activities and policies. It will also address complementary goals of EU environmental policy: to protect biodiversity and disseminate knowledge on it.
