Glassy Quantum Dynamics in Strongly Interacting Ultracold Atomic Gases

Final Report Summary - GLASSQD (Glassy Quantum Dynamics in Strongly Interacting Ultracold Atomic Gases)

The aim of the work was to understand, probe and exploit equilibrium and non-equilibrium phenomena in structured gases of highly excited atoms, with particular focus on quantum glassy phenomena. Not all of the objectives have been achieved due to an early termination of the contract by the fellow.
Nevertheless, the research undertaken has led to one publication in which the out-of-equilibrium behaviour of trapped ions was studied and experimental measurement methods for its study were proposed.
The contribution of the fellow was the calculation of the atomic structure of the trapped ions and its manipulation by external laser field. This has resulted in a scheme with which the dissipation and therefore the non-equilibrium dynamics of the trapped ions can be controlled and monitored.
