Condensed matter research at extreme experimental conditions

Objectif

Extreme experimental conditions are a necessary demand for state of art condensed Matter research. The proposed project denoted as ExtreM has as principal aim the significant strengthening of the research capabilities, infrastructure, and expertise in experiments performed at very low temperatures, very high magnetic fields, and very high pressures, in order to gain insight on the physical properties of extremely small samples of nanogram weight or nanometer size.

The proposed goals cannot be attained via commercial equipment, but will be achieved through a Transfer of Knowledge on experimental set-ups from world leading laboratories. The co-operation programme will help in the construction of a versatile dilution refrigerator for attaining temperatures in the mK range and in the development of state-of-the-art instrumentation (specific heat, Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy, and high-pressure experiments).

The implementation of these experimental techniques, complementary in many aspects, into the dilution refrigerator brings together unique experimental means which, in combination, can not be found elsewhere. Using the developed instrumentation, modern problems of condensed matter physics will be addressed by measurements of the spectral, transport, thermodynamic, and magnetic properties of novel superconductors showing unconventional behavior.

Among others, the topics of research deal with the spectacular example of multi-band/multi-gap superconductivity in MgB2, the intrinsic Josephson effect in bulk superconducting layered compounds, the rich vortex structure in the field-temperature phase diagram of superconducting compounds and spin polarisation in the hybrid superconducting/ferromagnetic nanostructures.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
