Space Explorer: the French campsite guide on CD-ROM is the final product of the Space Explorer project. The CD-ROM runs in a Windows 95 environment. The application uses geographical information system (GIS) and multimedia systems, (for example pictures, triggers, descriptions and maps).
The aim of the project was to develop a multi-lingual GIS umbrella for the management, integration, analysis and presentation of data which is of general interest for a large audience from one point of view, but at the same moment specific for every person. People want to know where to go and how to travel and how to combine several demands.
The reasons for a trip and the objectives of travel may be of several types: holiday, business, education, etc. Until now people used all kinds of tools to support their decision concerning the planning of their trip. The main advantage of electronic atlases is the great freedom in searching and the techniques available in order to make an optimal decision.
The stored data will be related to the topic involved. A considerable part of the data consists of general information, and can therefore be used for several applications. The Explorer is fully modular. This means that once the basic application has been developed, new explorations which contain new information can be added to the system.
The result is an interactive system, suggesting holiday solutions and providing touristic information, as well as travel information, for a trip to a campsite in France. There is an intelligent algorithm working behind the interface, selecting and storing information about the behaviour of the user with the interface. The user information is used by the system to determine which are the most preferred holiday characteristics of the interacting user.
