Objective
New generations of IFE Systems will provide more services at an affordable cost. But unlike other avionics systems most of the IFE equipment & boxes are installed inside the cabin, they may be buried in small enclosed zones and they are not connected to the aircraft cooling system ECS. This situation creates thermal management problem that affects the reliability, the safety and the cost of the equipment.
The most critical equipment being the Seat Electronic Box installed under each passenger seat. To face the increasing power dissipation, fans are necessary with the following drawbacks: extra cost when multiplied by the seat number, reliability and maintenance concern (filters, failures) & risk of blocking by passengers belongings.
The objective of the project is then to develop & evaluate an alternate cooling technique to the fans based on loop heat pipes phase change passive systems, adequately integrated inside the seat structure & taking benefit of the seat frame as a heat sink or of the aircraft structure when installed in the ceiling. Community collaboration is necessary due to the multidisciplinary nature of the problem to be solved and to the fact that the necessary expertise and knowledge cannot be found solely in one nation (heat pipes and cooling techniques, equipment integration and seat integration).
An International cooperation with ITP (Russian research leader & pioneer in the field of miniature LHP) is proposed to fertilize and strengthen the consortium research team. The technical & scientific objectives are: Transfer capacity up to 100W, thermal conductivity equivalent or greater than 800W/m/°K (x2 copper), Heat transportation distance 500mm, Resistance to aircraft cabin environment, Minimum volume and weight, Maintainability, affordadabily cost target. FP5 program are relevant to this project, MCUBE (development of micro heat pipes) & ANAIS (new IFE) coordinated by Thales Avionics and will bring experience and results to COSEE.
