Morphing Locally and Globally Structures with Multiscale Intelligence by Mimicking Nature

Final Report Summary - MORPHOSIS (Morphing Locally and Globally Structures with Multiscale Intelligence by Mimicking Nature)

MORPHOSIS project enabled the development of innovative materials that take inspiration from the multiple functionalities of biological systems and in particular from the multiscale morphing capability of some species. Novel carbon fiber composite materials integrated with ultra-light-weight sensing and actuating devices were designed and implemented to change their shape while their structural parameters are being monitored. A unique intelligent film coats the outer skin of the composite to induce local deformations that can play a significant role for drag reduction of transportation systems. Flexible intelligent films that are capable to adapt their shape in multiple scales and to the surroundings, were implemented. These morphing materials will have a significant impact in various fields that range from robotics, biomedical applications, intelligent aircrafts, smart buildings, automotive and space industry. More in general, the developed bio-inspired materials have a great potential to boost-up green economy and medical care in Europe.
