Mixed field dosimetry and NCT treatment planning

Objective

Transfer of knowledge and research of the project concern mixed high-and low-LET radiation dosimetry with special attention to its application in neutron capture therapy a binary treatment modality based on nuclear reactions initiated by capture of thermal neutrons by initially non radioctive nuclei with high cross section for such a capture. At present, the reaction with boron atoms (10B) is used for so called boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT). In this case, a boron nucleus captures thermal neutron producing an alpha particle and 7Li ion.

After 10B has been delivered selectively to tumour cells, it can be activated by neutrons to deliver locally lethal high-LET radiation. Tissues exposed to neutron beams are subject to a mixture of absorbed dose components. The most important components in tissue can be identified as photon dose, fast neutron dose and absorbed dose due to capture reactions notably in nitrogen and, in the case of BNCT, neutron capture also in boron.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
