Transfer of Knowledge Exciting Novelties for the Group for Research in Automatic Control Engineering on Hybrid Systems and Embedded Control Software Design.

Objetivo

Motivated by recent technological innovations, in the last five years both in Europe and in the US large multi-center research programs have been built for the study of hybrid systems modeling, analysis and control theory, and embedded control software design. Hybrid systems are heterogeneous systems which are abundant in all areas of engineering and scientific endeavor. Hybrid systems can switch between different operating modes where each mode is governed by its own characteristic dynamical laws. Recently, hybrid control synthesis has been recognized as a possible approach to facilitate the process of embedded control software design. Embedded control software design is a complex task which involves concurrency handling under real-time constraints for platforms which may have distributed sensors, actuators and CPUs. The hosting research group has a strong research background in standard control theory and has developed specific competence in several areas of automotive control engineering. Objective of the transfer of knowledge (TOK) will be the acquisition of competences on Hybrid Systems and Embedded Control Software Design. The project will advance our knowledge in all system-theoretic aspects of hybrid systems in order to provide our researchers new conceptual, mathematical and tool-supported methods for control design for such systems. The step from control design to its software implementation is not immediate and easy, especially for complex real-time systems. Therefore, the TOK will also focus on methods for implementing the aforementioned controllers on embedded control platforms with possibly distributed sensors, actuators, CPUs, and networks. The proposed Marie Curie TOK program will represent an invaluable opportunity for the new hosting institution to raise its academic profile and expand its research areas for a group who has an international relevance in the field of automotive engineering but operates in the less-favoured region of the EU.
