Homicides followed by the suicide of the perpetrator (hereafter HS) are a rare yet very serious form of interpersonal violence, which occurs mainly in partnerships and families. Little is known about the frequency and causation of these events. The aim of t he study is to collect data primarily from media archives on all cases of HS in a number of European countries, to compute population-based rates of HS for regions and countries, and to employ socio-demographic and survey data to explain area variances in the rate. The theoretical model draws on Durkheim's modes of social integration. Certain forms of violence are assumed to be more likely in highly integrated, 'collectivistic' social contexts. In addition, available data will be analysed with respect to socio-demographic profiles and victim-offender constellations.'
