Objective
The project PAYSANIAS aims to integrate tourist and recreational information with GIS technology and to provide services which are transmitted to individual end users.
The processed spatial tourist and recreational information will be transmitted using the existing tele-text network of Kapa-TEL company. The transmission media will be enhanced for the needs of the project with telephone and fax links between Kapa-TEL and end users. Two types of end users are envisioned to have access to the system. Those having direct connection with the above described linkage and the ones that are equipped with a compatible system (probably on a PC platform) and with a version of the database provided by Kapa-TEL and stored in CD-ROM.
The coverage of the system will be the most tourist areas in Greece referring to the islands of Crete, Rhodes, Corfu, Kephalinia, Zante, Lefkas, Ithaka and Sporades Islands (total area in sq. km = 12.500). The coverage of the system covers up to 50% of the external tourist flow of Greece. It is planned to support among others, two basic application utilities: travel consultancy and tourist and recreational routing programs.
The result of the project will be multilingual (the initial implementation will use two languages - Greek and English).
The combination of GIS technology with easily accessible (on-line or by telephone or by fax) travel information and planning services the marketing power of the most famous private data bank in Greece (Kapa-TEL) in conjunction with the value of technical and marketing background of the consortium, ensures the market penetration and success of the project.
