Developing lightweight modules for transport systems featuring efficient production and lifecycle benefits at structural and functional integrity using risk based design

Objective

Complex lightweight modules for ships and railway will be developed using risk based design methods. The modules will contain structural and outfitting components.
The modules can be efficiently pre-assembled under favourable working conditions using economy of scale. Modules can be adapted to customer needs thus featuring structural and functional integrity, improved safety and environmentally friendliness as well as efficient operation and reduced life cycle cost.
The development of lightweight modules will thus contribute to increase the competitiveness of European producers and operators of transport systems.
The application of risk based design methods will allow to develop highly innovative solutions exceeding the range of existing classification rules by exploring new material combinations, innovative joining, assembly and pre-outfitting techniques.
The scope of applications followed by DE-LIGHT reaches from passenger and RoRo ships, through cargo and short sea ships, to inter-modal transport units and railway carriages.
