Evaluation and control of neglected Mucosal Enteric infections in childhood

Objective

Diarrhoeal diseases are responsible for circa 12,600 paediatric deaths/day in developing regions. The co-morbidity associated with diarrhoeal diseases impacts on childhood development, nutritional status and cognitive function. The CONTENT proposal aims to provide new knowledge and technologies to improve control of neglected enteric pathogens in economically disadvantaged regions in Latin America. Additionally, iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) affects millions in developing countries. Iron deficiency adversely affects cognitive performance and growth impairment in children. A role for H. pylori in the aetiology of IDA in children has been proposed. The strategic objectives of CONTENT include (i) evaluating the impact of infection with Helicobacter pylori on childhood diarrhoeal diseases and growth (ii) Evaluation of the contribution of infection with H. pylori to the development of IDA and (iii) developing new molecular diagnostic tools for multiple enteric pathogens to facilitate improved disease surveillance.
A world-class team of twelve partners has been assembled to realise the strategic objectives of CONTENT. Delineation of the role of H. pylori in promoting diarrhoeal disease and IDA in children in developing countries will allow future interventional health care stategies to be based on sound clinical data. The implementation of improved disease surveillance systems will result in immediate health benefits to at-risk populations. Innovation-led research based on scientific and technical excellence will mutually benefit bi-regional researchers and facilitate capacity building throughout Latin America. The strategic focus of the proposal to develop new technologies and diagnostics beyond state of the art will impact on community societal objectives by improving health care and reducing the economic burden of infectious disease in a verifiable manner.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
