VEry LOw jitter MOde LOcked laser at 780nm for optical sampling applications

Final Report Summary - VELO MOLO_780 (VEry LOw jitter MOde LOcked laser at 780nm for optical sampling applications)

Photonic sources are the enabling element for an efficient digital communication. The use of pulsed laser with low timing jitter can be an indispensible tool in analog-to-digital conversion.
VELO MOLO_780 project aimed to investigate suitable sources at 780 nm for the use as a sampling signal for the state of the art photoswitches (mainly low temperature grown GaAs). Several laser architectures based on semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA) were studied including two material groups (InP and GaAs).
Preliminary results indicate that getting a pulsed source at 780 nm will need additional work on device design and reliability. Experiments made with InP based material placed in an external cavity show that this type of system is a promising candidate for an ultrafast laser investigated for high speed sampling.
