Fluid Mechanics in Collective Behaviour: Multiscale Modelling and Applications

Final Report Summary - FMCOBE (Fluid Mechanics in Collective Behaviour: Multiscale Modelling and Applications)

The project has elucidated the fluid mechanics of collective behaviour across systems at the nano, meso and macroscales. For the first time we have evidence that fish can exploit their hydrodynamic interactions to swim efficiently, we have quantified modeling uncertainties in nano and mesoccale simulations of water and blood. We have performed one of the largest ever simulations (blood flow using trillions of particles) in supercomputers and have developed along the way powerful algorithms and software for multiscale simulations, uncertainty quantification and machine learning that are making inroads in multiple applications across disciplines.
